About

About The Stateside Report

An independent education publication for Americans who invest beyond U.S. borders.

The Stateside Report explains foreign investing to Americans. We cover the mechanics most investors never get told about: how ADRs are built, what foreign governments withhold from your dividends, how to claim it back, and how to read the filings of small Canadian mining companies without relying on anyone's sales pitch.

A name with history, under new ownership

For roughly two decades, from the mid-2000s, the Stateside Report name belonged to a newsletter covering small Canadian mining and exploration companies for U.S. readers. The publication was relaunched in 2026 by DreamsStreet as an independent education site. It is not affiliated with the previous owner, does not continue its stock coverage, and does not use any of its content.

We kept the original focus on Canadian junior miners and widened the lens to the broader question American investors face: how to own foreign companies sensibly, whether through ADRs, foreign shares or funds.

What we do, and what we don't

  • We explain. Rules, mechanics, forms, filings and the questions to ask.
  • We don't recommend securities. No buy or sell calls, no price targets, no model portfolios. When we name a company it is to illustrate how something works.
  • We don't take money from issuers. No paid coverage, no sponsored articles, no compensation in cash or shares from any company we write about.
  • We aren't your adviser. We are not a registered investment adviser, broker-dealer or tax preparer. Our content is general and can't account for your circumstances.

How we verify figures

Every tax rate, threshold and rule figure on this site is checked against an authoritative source: the IRS, the SEC and FINRA, the text of U.S. tax treaties, foreign tax authorities, stock exchanges and the Canadian Securities Administrators. The sources appear at the bottom of each page, along with the date the page was last checked.

Figures that change, such as withholding rates, are rechecked on a schedule and whenever a change is announced. If you spot something out of date, please tell us at hello@statesidereport.com; corrections are made promptly and noted.

How the site is funded

The site is funded by sales of our own educational products, such as the Foreign Stock & ADR Investor's Workbook. In the future we may use clearly labeled affiliate links for brokers or research tools. We will never take advertising or affiliate money from a company we cover, and an affiliate relationship will never change what we write.
